I remember it just as if it were on videotape. |

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. I had just asked MrHyde (David Hyde), the author of a couple of very useful mappers utils, to join Tarot, and we were kinda putzin around with weapons and their properties. Dude had never before done any in-game programming, so I was kinda throwing stuff at him to see what stuck. After a couple of days of this, he'd gotten a pretty good bearing of what it was all about. So he says (if I remember right) ``it'd be cool if any Joe could do this stuff then compile and play it." I then shared with him the idea that I had about a year and a half ago with using a Windows based front end. Click a couple of check boxes, maybe punch in a couple of numbers, then click ``Build" and start up a listen server at a lan party. Small download (if any) and you're up and running with YOUR tweaks to your favorite mod. . . CTF with airstrikes, for example (= We talked about it a bit, then kinda said we might should wait until after HHQ3. Couple days later, that so-called decision was out the door. About August 99 v1.0 was released. |

There's bound to be some ppl that are skeptical. Here's where you find out what's up before you download the thing. The RYO interface uses simple controls (sliders, spin buttons, checkboxes, and a few numeric inputs) that allow you to change weapon characteristics, specify alternate firing modes, add new powerups, specify a full-blown mod, etc., then writes all of this information to a header file that's referenced by all of the game source code. For the user, it's literally no more complicated than anything in the Windows Control Panel. Once you've figured out everything you want to do, you can save
it. It comes out REAL small . . . like 2k which obviously can be emailed or given out pretty easily. After you've saved it, click ``Build" and wait about a minute. As a test system, I ran the builder on a 166mmx and it took a little over 2
minutes... on a 300 the same save file was done in about 40 seconds. On my new and shiny-like-a-holiday p3-500, it usually takes about 9 seconds! Easy Cheasy! Right now your mod choices are HeadHunters/HHctf, Rock/Paper/Skizzers, Freeze Tag, HolyWars, DM and CTF. There's plenty of opportunity for other mods to be added, and that is the plan. If there's a mod that you'd like to see added, then let us know, and send the author our way. We'll make an offer they can't refuse.
Some of the items have special sounds, so there is a small download. . . it could vary, but usually < 100k. I can't call it serverside, but I can certainly say it's `damn
near serverside' without fear. In the future, the builder will have the opportunity to use new and different models for powerups. |

Roll Your Own would not have been possible without the efforts of many different individuals and/or teams in producing their mods and, more importantly for RYO, making the source of those mods available to the public. Although many of the modifications mentioned below have been edited, mutilated, and transmogrified into a form unrecognizable to the original authors for inclusion in RYO, we'd be remiss if we didn't acknowledge their efforts. An immediate thanx to tarot members, and anyone else that contributed but isn't mentioned. Thanx. |
